Its
history:
Avesnes
was founded by Wédric le Barbu (Wédric the bearded)
in the XIth century.
The
house of Avesnes gave birth to a Queen of England, Philippa
de Hainaut, who obtained grace for the citizens of Calais but also
for the ancestors of Henry IV, the Princes of Condé and the
Dukes of Guise.
Jessé
de Forest and his companions, who were to found New York, left from
Avesnes in the XVIth century.
Louis
XIth was proclaimed King, and Napoleon prepared the Battle
of Waterloo in Avesnes.
In
1918, Kaiser Wilhelm IInd and Marshal Hindenburg organised the last
German offensive there.
Access:
located
to the south of the "département" of the Nord, the
town of Avesnes sur Helpe is accessible by National Road (RN) 2
and the departmental road 951. It is easily accessible by trains
of the TER network.

Mayor of Avesnes is Alain POYART.
Mr.
Poyars is also a General Councillor for the Nord Département
and President of the Community of communes in the Avesnes region.

Not
to be missed:
The
St. Nicolas collegial church: choir
(1200) in the primitive Gothic style, nave and aisles from the XVIth
century in "Hallekerque" form.
Carillon
of 48 bells: concert on 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month in
season.
Fortifications:
Remains of the Gossuin tower (around 1100), bastion of the Queen
and its underground rooms, fortifications of Vauban with its promenade
and access to the XVIIth century Mons Gate.
Traditional
games: the moistened lance and the bowling game
Festivals
End
of March - beginning of April: The "Foire aux Mouches" (major
trade, crafts and tourism fair).
From
the 1st Sunday in August to 15th August: "Grand
Ducasse" and market/flea market.
End
of September: Autumn festival: theatre, cinema, concerts, street
animation, exhibitions, etc.
Specialities:
In
1900, its butter market was one of the largest in France. Since
them, it has preserved its gastronomy based on its specialities
and in particular its cheeses: Maroilles, Dauphin, Boulette and
Coeur d'Avesnes.
These
skills have been represented by the Guild of the Avesnes Boulette
and the Flamiche au Maroilles cheeses since 1997.

The
Val Joly Park, 10 km from Avesnes, is enjoyed by young and
old alike. This is an authentic nautical complex for all the family
among greenery and focused on a 180-hectare lake.
It includes
an open-air swimming pool, an aquarium with freshwater fish, games
for children, a riding centre, purely nautical activities (pedalos,
electric boats, windsurfing, catamarans, kayaks and dinghies), archery,
a national mountain bike centre, an 18-hole mini golf course, a fitness
trail, a campsite and holiday chalets; possibility of fishing and
restaurant services.

projects:
Restoration
of the facades of the town centre and the St. Jean Bastion with the
triple objective of cultural discovery, improvement of everyday living
conditions and the development of tourism. Concerning the latter,
the town has applied to the Ministry of Tourism for classification
as a "City of Tourism".
